Steve Hathaway

Underwater videographer

Steve Hathaway is an underwater cameraman. His footage has appeared on many international documentaries including the underwater images for the award winning BBC documentary “The Woman Who Swims With Killer Whales”. His greatest passion is to show off NZ’s stunning underwater world.

Most people don’t realise that 93% of NZ’s territory is ocean and that this zone is every bit as spectacular as the slice of NZ everyone knows (the land). His aim is to bring this world alive for people who might never experience it.

Last year he was part of the Sir Peter Blake Trust’s ‘Young Blake Expedition’ to the Kermadecs, where he documented the 30 young voyagers underwater experiences.
He’s very stoked to have the opportunity to visit these remote islands again!

What do you hope to achieve on this expedition to the Kermadecs?

I find it really interesting when telling people about this expedition, that the vast majority have no idea where the Kermadecs are, yet it’s NZ’s largest marine reserve and one of the most pristine marine environments on the planet.

I want to bring back footage and stories that wow people about this incredible region and give them a reason to ensure it’s kept this way for future generations.

What skills are you bringing to the team?

I’m looking forward to shooting and editing all the videos you’ll see on our daily blogs, and sharing our adventures.

When you’re not on an expedition what does a “day at work” look like for you?

I live a funny kind of existence, where I feel like a fireman at all times – ready to jump into action when the call to film Orca or other marine life comes. Otherwise you’ll find me in front of my computer editing footage and spending way too much time dreaming about expeditions to remote regions around NZ.
