Whale chasers

For the past two weeks the Natural History New Zealand crew has been taking every opportunity they get to film humpback whales underwater. Unfortunately the massive animals can be quite skittish when they hear the boat’s engine and divers’ bubbles. But the team has come up with a unique solution to this problem. Kina Scollay flies his drone high above the whales capturing a unique perspective on the leviathans, and providing Brady Doak with a visual reference of the animal’s where abouts. This allows Brady to swim up to the whales quietly using a snorkel while following the drone. As he reaches the whales Brady switches over to SCUBA to film the action. The result is amazing coverage of the whales behaviour from above and below the surface.

Kina is on the search with his drone while Elliot and Brady scan the horizon for humpback whales.
