The crew will shortly reach L’Esperance – the first island stop of this expedition
We are making 9.5 knots into a 20 knot nor’east wind, and we are just an hour away from the first of the Kermadec Islands we will reach – L’Esperance.
The crew are hardened sailors and are enjoying the trip but the same can’t be said for most of the science team. Most of us having been lying low, literally – our bunks are below the waterline and one of the most stable places on the boat, so we’re taking it easy down there.
Not much to report from the bridge, although the man with the binoculars at the ready, Clinton, did see a big sunfish jump out of the water half a dozen times yesterday. And he says it was a good thing it jumped several times as he was having difficulty working out what he was looking at! We’ll decide what we’re doing to day once we get to L’Esperance – it may be too rough to dive, but I know that Peter and Warren are keen to get ashore to look for plants and insects.
No doubt I’ll find my sea legs soon but apparently Darwin suffered from seasickness on the HMS Beagle so at least I’m in good company.
